So thanks to Trenitalia we were out exploring again today. The white city of Ostuni lies north of Brindisi on the way to Bari. We knew that the hill-top city was a ways from the train station and as we had had a very lazy day on Tuesday (April 25th is a national holiday in Italy and everything was closed) we needed the exercise.

I am tall thanks to a long torso, I do not, I repeat, I do not have long legs. I have very short legs…my husband, however, does not. So it was a challenge to walk the 45 minutes along the side of the road single file as not to get smacked by the fast driving Italians. But the white city of Ostuni was well worth the struggle. Both he and I commented that J.R.R Tolkien must of used this as inspiration for Gondor. Along winding roads and up steep steps we worked our way into the heart of the city. After some exploring we decided it was time to find a place for a much deserved beer (or two). We wiled away over two hours in the sunny main piazza of Ostuni. As peak tourism season was still a ways off, the waitresses did not seem to mind our lingering and even brought us some tasty bruschetta with our second pint.

We then sought out a quiet park to eat our lunch and even got to watch a few pups have a good run around in the sunshine. The trip back to the train station was on the city shuttle and was a lot more enjoyable.

It is called the white city for a reason.
