Dubbed as the culture capitol of Poland, Kraków did not disappoint. The sites and energy was amazing and the food was superb. We enjoyed our stay here and despite a little rain in the beginning had a most enjoyable time.
A visit to Kraków is not complete without a trip to the Memorial and Museum to Auschwitz and Birkenau. I wrote about that in a separate post. This post is about the beautiful city of Kraków and all that she has to offer.
Kraków is situated along the Wisła river in the south of Poland. It was the capitol city until the1500s, when it was moved to Warsaw. The remanence of this importance is felt in the beautiful architecture (thankfully spared the destruction of WW2) and the large parks and monuments.
Our AirBnB was in the Kazimierz district and it was a good location for us. According to Google, “Trendy, creative Kazimierz is Krakow’s historic Jewish quarter, now a jumble of indie galleries, quirky shops, vintage clothing stores and bars that range from hip cocktail dens to shabby-chic spaces.” So we fit right in!

We try to cook on the road as much as possible, firstly to cut costs and secondly to try and discover the unique food culture of a particular region. In Poland, this was of course pierogi, potato pancakes, pickles, bagels and of course Kielbasa. The Main Square (Rynek Główny) was full of food stalls selling all sorts of wonderful things. We ate here twice and on the first occasion, met some lovely fellow Canadians doing a 6 weeks in Europe whirlwind tour (they said they had already been to the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany… I lost track). The second time we had to have the pierogis. We are on “holiday” after all so a beer (piwo) in the main square while people watching was a must.
The food of Poland is hearty and for the most part healthy. We found the grocery stores to be packed with produce and restaurants offered good food at really reasonable prices (if you got out of the tourist region). More people should put Poland on their travelling lists.
