As we want to make our travel euros last as long as possible, we decided to take the bus from Catania to Siracusa. The Interbus line was inexpensive (€ 5,70 each) and convenient, with the stop close to the Catania Fish Market. We arrived in Siracusa and our Airbnb host Fabio met us at the bus stop. He walked us to the apartment, gave us a city map and told us some interesting places to go in town. His apartment is beautiful and well connected. Check it out on Airbnb.
Once we had our bags put away we went to go grab some lunch as we had arrived around 1:15pm. We did not choose the best place to eat as we were hungry and did not want to dally looking for a suitable restaurant. It was a wee bit touristy (English Menu) but the food was decent – they also gave us a free shot of some liquor and the house white wine was tasty.
Restaurant Tip: In most Italian restaurants they charge you for bread… if you do not want it, send it back.
After some much needed nourishment we decided to explore the older part of town called the Island of Ortigia. We searched out the Market Square so that we knew where to go tomorrow and wandered through the pedestrian only streets. As we are both drawn to the sea we found ourselves on a raised stone boardwalk and gazed out at the Mediterranean Sea. There was a lonely sailboat just starting out and we waited while they raised her sails and set off. We also saw some local street cats being fed by some well meaning tourists.
We ended the evening with homemade pizza and some wine.
