According to travel sites, Lecce is the natural jumping off point for exploring the Salerno area of the Puglia region. Thus, we set off on Monday morning for this lovely Baroque town with a sense of determination. First to find the bus stop that would lead us to our next day trip and to explore the city of Lecce.
Now I must admit, the bus line website was in Italian, but with the help of google translate we managed to figured out the buses we needed to take but we did not know exactly where the stops were located. You can imagine our disappointment when the tour info office clerk told us that they only ran in the summer and that the only way to see anything this time of year was by car (eye roll). Well this put a damper on things. We also tried to find the covered market in Lecce but either the tourist map was wrong or it does not exist anymore. Boo.
We also had poor luck finding a place to eat in Lecce. As per my previous posts, He want to get off the beaten path and we attempted to do this again in Lecce. But in the first place we tried, as He puts it , “some denim and t-shirt clad twenty-something turned us down” as we did not have a reservation. To us the placed looked almost deserted. Starting to feel like this was not our day. We managed to find a nice little bistro for lunch and reward ourselves with wine (I had prosecco).
We knew that Southern Italy was going to be a challenge. Today it won.
