Sundays and Mondays can be tricky travel days here in Europe. Most tourist attractions are closed on Sundays and many of them remain closed through Monday. So instead of hitting the sites, Henrik and I hit our favourite things – food markets. Now we admit that Bologna has wonderful grocery stores, that are open everyday (yes, even Sundays), but we had been waiting to experience the open market of a city of foodies for quiet some time. We were not disappointed and we managed to hit two: the ancient Quadrilatero Market and the indoor Mercato Delle Erbe or Herb Market.
We did do some wandering around and managed to visit the Tourism Information Office and pick up our map of Bologna; we try to do this in every city we visit, most of them are free and those that are not are usually under one Euro. The map provided us with an interesting walking tour of the city that we followed for a time between the markets. Of course it took us past some of the higher end retailers in the Galleria Cavour. Beautifully decorated with the strains of classical music in the air, we were out of our league. But not to worry, I had a firm grip on my credit card and it was fantastic just to window shop. At the tourist office we also learned that starting on Friday there was to be a city wide garden tour with many residents opening their gardens up for visitors. It starts on Friday so we can at least see the opening of this event.
