When I booked this Airbnb in Bari, I had Henrik’s love of the sea and sailboats in mind, and that it would set us up for the larger sailing trip (fingers crossed) that was to happen in mid-June. I should have consulted Google Maps more and I should have read the reviews more… but alas I didn’t. All I saw was that it was a boat. The marina was out in the boonies and we could not use the kitchen (galley) for anything other than breakfast…Whoops. We were here for three days, maybe the longest three days of my life. Did I also mention that I suffer from motion sickness and that evening, along with the dread that I had booked us into a nightmare, I was feeling the motion of the ocean a little too strongly. It was also raining.
Saturday, however was bright and sunny and we were able to walk into Bari and enjoy the old town. We also visited two churches. The pride and joy of Bari, the Basilica di San Nicola and the senior church but less famous, the Cattedrale di San Sabino. Both had beautiful crypts that were surprisingly (almost disappointedly) well lit. The Basilica has the most impressive painted ceiling and there were preparations underway for a wedding. The Cattdrale was also beautiful, if a little less ornate, and the simple and numerous columns gave it a very open feeling. Bari was showing off her religious architecture; but two churches was enough for us for one day.
On Sunday, He decided to get some work done so I ventured into the old town of Bari and was met with a huge crowd of people. Apparently the Gran Premio di Bari was ending that day. It was a race of really old cars around the town. The buzz of the city was astonishing, people were everywhere and many streets were blocked off for the race. I must admit I got lost a few times but all I had to do was listen for the rumbling of the engines to find my way back to the centre of town. I headed back to the boat after picking up som lunch fixings to make sure that Henrik had not taken off on me as the weather was fine for a sail. That evening we went out for pizza to the place recommended by our Airbnb host, Captain Mimmo. It was delicious, cheap and where the locals eat. Yeah! He was happy. It was also at the end of a beautiful long seawall. As we walked there the spray of the sea and the setting sun made Bari all that more bearable… and that we only had one more day.
May 1st is Labour Day for most of the world. Thus were preparing for a day that nothing would be open, however Eataly (Eat Italy…get it) a two level beautiful curated grocery store featuring all the edible delights of Italy was open for the tourist crowd. I must admit it was impressive to see. The number of products was astonishing and all artfully displayed to make parting with your Euros very easy (those that know us well will not be surprised to learn that we did not spend a single Euro cent).
Our amazing host Captain Mimmo drove us to the airport on to catch our flight to Sardinia and after getting out of the car I got a big hug Italian style. He wished that we could have gone sailing and that when we come back to Bari that we let him know and to keep in touch.
