After the bustle of Palermo we headed out to the touristy little town of Taormina. I must admit that we should have spent another day in Palermo; after all it is the largest city in Sicily. But this was a fact finding mission and I thought that 3 nights in a big city was enough… my bad. So with a need to come back, we left the bustle and noise of Palermo and boarded a SAIS air conditioned coach back to the Catania Airport we then had an easy transfer to the Interbus on to Taormina. Yes we took the bus again. It is the only way to travel around Sicily. The two lines above served our needs well; there was a third line that we think may have serviced the western part of the island – we will just have to wait until next time.
Our first glimpse of the seaside resort town of Taormina was stunning. However, the winding road that took us up from the coast into town was a complete nail-bitter, reminding us of the bus ride along the Amafi Coast in 2013. We met the son of our AirBnB host at the bus station and he took us to the beautiful apartment that we would call home fore the next few days (link to apartment on AirBnB). He also told us that there would be a procession through town tonight as it was Good Friday. After he left us to settle in we decided we needed to venture out to find some supplies. Finding our way through narrow streets we emerged on the pedestrian only shopping area of Taormina. It seemed that all of Europe was here, the street was packed. The shops were all high end retail and had the prices to match. Me and He being budget savvy, ventured off the beaten path to the grocery store where we procured some things for breakfast and our under €5 bottles of wine.
Around 7:30pm we heard some music coming from the main drag; we had almost forgotten about the Good Friday Procession. A quick scramble to put on shoes, grab keys and get out the door and we were in the thick of things. When the crowd got a little too thick for our comfort we headed for home and some dinner.

We are at the back of the Good Friday Procession through the streets of Taormina. You can just make out the cross ahead being carried by a number of gentlemen.
