Quattro Canti – The Four Corners. A Baroque, octagonal square with 4 fountains topped by statues in niches. The city in preparation for Easter had decorated them with the purple and gold banners.

Now having grown up around buses, I was happy to change our travel itinerary, and of course He being ever conscious of our budget, was more than pleased with cutting our Sicily travel costs in half. We thus arrived in Palermo a little after 5pm and were greeted by our AirBnB host at the bus station. Maurizio then drove us to the apartment and en route told us briefly about the things to do in the neighbourhood. He gave us some tourist information pamphlets too so I was good to go in the morning.
After settling ourselves in to the noisy but serviceable little apartment, we set out to explore the city. Having not really planned our meal for that evening we decided that a quick pasta meal at the apartment with a glass of wine out would be the way to go. After our easy meal at home, we soon found ourselves in the pedestrian only zone. A lovely place to stroll but to He’s dismay, a little too touristy. But we found a nice place to have a half-carafe of house white wine and were even serenaded by a gentleman who played a mean accordion.
The apartment in our little part of Palermo is noisy, I mean really noisy. If it is not traffic or construction sounds (they are basically gutting the apartment two floors below), it is the people yelling down from balconies to family members on the street. It is a good thing we brought ear plugs or we would have never gotten any sleep.
Our first full day in Palermo started with a bright sunny sky and a feeling of anticipation. He was going to work for the morning so it was up to Me to explore the markets and forage for some lunch. I had a good wander and eventually made it back to the apartment with much needed sustenance. The afternoon He joined me and we back tracked to the now closed market and discuss what treasures we will discover tomorrow. We may do dinner out tonight, hopefully somewhere off the beaten path… fingers crossed.
