We both enjoyed Reggio Calabria more than expected. Yes, our accommodation was old and out of the way, but it was both budget and people friendly. Unfortunately there was no great market in Reggio…little did we realize that this was going to be a trend for a while… but we were still able to make good meals and we even had a pizza and beer night. The local pizzeria was good and super cheap. The highlights of Reggio for Me was the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia, the seaside boulevard that cleverly hides the rail tracks and Cesare Gelato.

But our short three night stay in Reggio Calabria was over and it was time to make our way across the instep of the boot to Brindisi. Early in the planning we could not find any transportation routes that would take less than twelve to fourteen hours, and with a detour via Napoli or Rome. Ugh. So back in September of 2016, with gritted teeth, I booked us a car. Having Googled the route, there was no harrowing cliffs like along the Amalfi coast, it was simple highway (autostrada in Italian) driving. A month before we left we went to BCAA and got our international drivers licenses. However, about a week before the commencement of the driving adventure, we (He) started getting a little uncomfortable…So we turned to our old friend Trenitalia and if we went through the very industrial town of Taranto, it would only take 8.5 hours!

We arrived in a chilly Brindisi and made our way to our AirBnB. The photos were a little deceiving and it appeared that I had booked us into an almost windowless bunker for 8 days! Time for some wine…
