Time apart for time together

This will be brief. Reason being I’m rather fried and, in turn, the reason for that is that I worked no less than five hours today. And work today was of a particularly intellectually stimulating kind that leaves the brain washed up in the gutter, glasses akimbo and lip cracked pleading for mercy. Whoa, wha? Work? Work when on vacation in Italy for a number of months? Well, see that’s just it, you see; I’m not really on vacation. We’re able to leave the comfort of our homestead and be gone for a number of months because my work situation permits such extravagances such as getting meaningful things done remotely. It’s just that some days are more intense than others. Plus, and please pardon me as I’m stepping up on my soap box here, I posit that hour for hour, we’re simply more productive when working part time. There. I said it.

Don’t misunderstand me; I’m not complaining. We’re in Italy, spending either morning or afternoons together usually shopping for food (I shudder to think if human beings only needed to eat once a month or so. What would we do with all our time?) or sometimes just aimlessly lollygagging and taking it all in. So for people who actually enjoy what they do, which is the case for me most of the time, and are fortunate enough that their charming presence isn’t constantly required at an office somewhere and thus can get stuff done for pay with nothing but mobile devices and a rudimentary understanding of time zones, then why not?

As a bonus, and hitched vagabonds will most likely nod their heads in knowing agreement when it comes to the wisdom for a couple that travels together to also spend time apart when on the road. This holds true even (or especially) for couples that have been together for a while, which in our case means for almost twenty years and, out of those, married for fourteen. So even though it means that some afternoons I’ll pass on the local sights and will keep bringing my trusty Linux laptop that has enough horsepower to keep me sustained. When more is needed, AWS haven’t let me down yet.

We had such a monstrously large lunch today with three mackerel and a delightful bruschetta made with ingredients bought at today’s market this morning that we only felt like having a light Caprese salad with some olives and a couple of glasses, OK a bottle, of wine for dinner.
