Needless to say leaving The Hague was a bit of an adventure. Bad weather was coming and we needed to wait until the evening to set out for the English Chanel. We got a close look at some impressive lightning and got good use out of our foul weather gear as we were hit by a massive amount of rain… we are from Vancouver and thought we knew rain!!
Around 8pm on Thursday evening the storm had passed so we set out in the direction of the English Chanel – Dunkerque or Calais were mentioned as possible places to stay en route. The sea was a little rough so I was trying to stave off motion sickness by getting some sleep. A few hours later, a frazzled Henrik came down to tell me that there were issues with the mast and that we were heading for Rotterdam to seek refuge.
We did not actually reach Rotterdam, but made it as far as a very industrial port near the Hook of Holland. After being escorted in by the Harbour Pilot Boat we were immediately boarded by the harbour police. These guys gave us a bit of a rough time, as in their minds, we had not followed proper procedures with German and Dutch Immigration officials up to this point – we had no exit and entry stamps. Myself and the other non-Schengen passport holder, in their minds, were thus illegal and not allowed to leave the boat…Eeep. They advised us to call immigration in the morning and sort ourselves out. After a sleepless night and a confusing hour with the immigration officers at the Stena Line Ferry building the next morning, it turns out, the harbour police were wrong…what jerks. We had done everything right and there was no immigration issues with any of us.
It was then that Henrik and I decided that our journey on S/Y Sarah was over. We found a way to get into Rotterdam and booked an overnight bus from the Central Station that would take us to Copenhagen. Once there we could take to train into Sweden and spend time with our family for a while.
