Part of our travel mantra is to try and live like locals… today however, we were classic tourists. Having been sick for the past few days, the weather was still too breezy for the boats, and the local transit bus only going in the morning, we were running out of time and options to go to Neptune’s Grotto. We had seen the big red buses parked near the entrance to the marina a few times and I had noticed that they indeed did go out to the grotto. “If we can get off the bus, then I am going” says Henrik. Low and behold it is a hop-on, hop-off bus and yes they go to the grotto. Hurray! The next scheduled departure is in 40 minutes just long enough for us to grab the fixings for a picnic lunch.
Go big or go home is another mantra on which we try to live… so when riding on a bright red, double-decker, open air tour bus; ride on the top and at the front. The round trip was an hour and 40 minutes, but we would get off after an hour at the grotto, have just under 2 hours there and take the 40 minute ride back into town. The commentary was interesting and gave good insight into the history of Sardinia.
Once we arrived at the site it was time to climb the over 600 stairs down to the opening of the grotto. The weather was perfect. Bright blue skies and a breeze that kept the heat of the sun bearable. Once at the bottom we were greeted by a sign that stated if you wanted to actually go into the grotto you had to wait for the guided tour and pay €13,00. We did not want to wait the 40 minutes until the next tour and then potentially miss our big red bus ride back to Alghero. So we took our time walking back up the 600+ stairs and had a lovely drink (or two) at the snack bar overlooking the sea. Overall it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
Apparently we did not miss much in the grotto as we spoke to some sisters from the Netherlands that actually did go in and make it back (barley) for the bus. They had seen better…
