Our trip from Bari to Alghero on the island of Sardegna (Sardinia) was 12 hours long; this was our longest travel day yet. We started off with a RyanAir flight to Cagliari on the southern tip of the island and made our way North to Alghero via two trains. Our beloved Trenitalia could only take us 3/4 of the way to a small inland town called Sassari. Then we hopped aboard the Bombardier looking commuter train that took us the rest of the way to Alghero on the coast. The train station was located just a little outside of town so we took the local bus and then walked about 11 minutes to our Airbnb apartment. Upon entering the apartment and taking in the view of the Mediterranean from our balcony we both knew that the gruelling trip was well worth it. Our host had also provided all of these wonderful amenities; including a local bottle of rose – it was like the universe knew we needed a break. Exhausted but happy to be settled for a week in a beautiful spot we fell asleep.
Our first morning in Alghero was brilliantly sunny, but our western facing balcony was shady and cool, allowing us to have our morning coffee overlooking the stunning Mediterranean sea. After breakfast we explored the town and found the covered market (not as impressive as the markets in Sicily – we were spoiled both in price and produce availability there) and a good selection of grocery stores and specialty shops too meet all of our culinary desires; we had a full kitchen with an impressive amount of pots, pans and gadgets. After a quick trip down to the rocky beach we determined that if Henrik were to have a morning swim or two, he needed to get some sturdy water shoes. We also met another charming older gentleman and through some Italian and German, Henrik was able to discover that the swimming here was good all year.
We wandered back through the centre of town and found that everyone was gearing up for the Giro d’Italia. The massive bicycle race that apparently was starting here in Aghero on Friday May 5th. FYI there are 21 stages of this impressive race (route overview). Pink decorations were everywhere and all with a bicycle theme. At the waterfront there was a massive stage erected and the engineers were busy testing the sound and lights when we walked by. We are going to like it here.
